At Subbuteopia there are the Parodi Brothers who continue their father Edilio’s small company in the North of Italy, employing a half dozen workers. Edilio was the legendary distributor of Subbuteo in Europe from 1971. When the American company Hasbro, which owns the trademark Subbuteo and is the second toy manufacturer in the world with over 4 billion dollars in sales, in 2000 decided to discontinue production of the game, the Parodi brothers did not accept what seemed to be an inevitable outcome.
They decided to challenge the multinational to keep Subbuteo alive
Subbuteopia was realised thanks the help of many supporters by the crowdfunding www.verkami.com/subbuteopia
NOTE OF ARTISTIC INTENT
David against Goliath. On one side a small Italian family-owned business, with seven employees, and on the other side the gigantic American Hasbro.
And thanks to them Subbuteo did not die.
In 2011, there are once again millions of players and official competitions in over 30 different countries around the world (Europe, USA, Singapore, Argentina, Canada, South Africa, etc…).
Subbuteopia is a project that delves into the world of Subbuteo, the legendary table soccer game first created in England back in 1947.
Eutopia = good place
Outopia = no place
so the title Subbuteopia
A non place where fans,enthusiasts, old-boys and the simply curious meet.
Subbuteopia is also a team with our own colour: white. White as this is the colour of the figures before they are painted and because white is the presence of all colours together.
Our team doesn’t have a face because it is all the faces together of all the people who like Subbuteo or loved it many years ago when they were kids and are now rediscovering their lost passion.
