Between ‘57 and ‘58, epochal changes invested the world, revolutions and coup d’état alternated, Russians and Americans began the race for the conquest of the space (Sputnik I and II, Explorer 1), the nuclear submarine Nautilus’ travelled under the arctic polar cap, six European countries signed the Treaty of Rome, John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time in Liverpool and ‘On the Road’ of Jack Kerouac was published in the United States. Italy was at the height of the economic boom, Fiat brang the first 500 into the market, the ‘Carosello’ broadcast started, the two tv programs ‘The Musichiere’ by Mario Riva and ‘Lascia o Raddoppia’ by Mike Bongiorno were a great success. Domenico Modugno sang his ‘Nel Blu dipinto di Blu’ that become a worldwide hit, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli ascended to the papal throne and became Papa Giovanni XXIII.

In this context of great transformations, two young boys from Bologna, in Italy, decided to leave their mark on the history with an unthinkable enterprise for that time, almost as a trip into space keeping their feet on the ground, but better to say their wheels.

A trip through five continents, 35 countries and 4 revolutions, riding two Ducati 175.
An extraordinary story of the past world through the story of the two motorbukers that faced the enterprise with a photo-camera, a camera 16mm and a pocket map of the world.

Giorgio Monetti and Leopoldo Tartarini are the two protagonists-narrators.
The story will be about them and this strange couple ante litteram, and about their adventures. It’s not only a story of a journey by motorcycles through five continents but a trip in the diversity and complementarity, human and technical symbioses of the two characters that was the base of the success of the story.

NOTE OF ARTISTIC INTENT

The documentary also will be an overview of a world that no longer exists, it’s half a century ago. Thanks to the good shots in 16 mm film, photos and stories of the experience of the two protagonists in the territories and among the population of many countries now deeply transformed.
We will review also old footage of the events, and they were many, that led to a new political and social world at that time. From the important space trips from the USA and the URSS during the Cold War, from the birth of the EEC to the revolutions in various countries around the world, from the newborn beat generation to the Beatles, from the success of the Italian singer Modugno to the coming out of the first Fiat 500 which radically changed the way people travel, not only for the Italians.

The music is also evocative of the period of ‘57 and ‘58. Evergreen international songs alternate with original music composed with the traditional sounds of the countries they visited and other songs composed to emphasize particular situations of the story.
